Contrary to popular belief, there are many pathways to the NFL from a HBCU. Former Southern University star running back, Lenard Tillery is living proof. Despite going undrafted, Tillery signed a free agent contract with the LA Rams.
Tillery is no stranger to adversity. In fact, the Baton Rouge native began his career at Southern as a walk on in 2012. By 2013 he was named the starting running back. Tilley took full advantage of this opportunity. He ended his career as the All-Time SWAC Leading Rusher with 4,837 rushing yards. Shattering the previous record by nearly 800 yards!
Even with former Georgia running back Todd Gurley on the roster, the Rams need all the rushing help they can get. Last season, the Rams ranked 31st out 32 total NFL teams in total rushing offense. Tillery hopes to be a spark out the backfield.
LA Rams rookie camp begins on May 12th. Stay tuned for more updates on Lenard Tillery. In the meantime, check out Tillery senior season highlights below.
