Prior to Saturday’s contest we picked Howard versus Bethune-Cookman as the “BlackBall Sports Game of the Week.” This was Howard’s home opener and first game against MEAC competition.
History was not on the Bison’s side. Howard had lost six straight games against Bethune-Cookman dating back to 2009. Even worse, they hadn’t beat Bethune-Cookman at home since 1996.
All of that would change Saturday. Both teams went back and forth all afternoon. At halftime the score was tied at 14. Bethune-Cookman took a 21-20 lead into the fourth quarter. With a few minutes left the Wildcats expanded their lead to 24-20 on a field goal.
With limited time on the clock, Caylin Newton stepped up in the clutch. Facing a four point defecit, Newton drove his team 45 yards in nine plays. Newton capped off the drive with a five yard touchdown run leaving only 39 seconds on the clock. Newton’s touchdown gave Howard a 26-24 edge and the Bison would not reliquenish the lead.
Caylin Newton finished with 157 passing yards, 140 rushing yards, and three total touchdowns.
The Bison will face defending MEAC champs, North Carolina Central in their next game.
