For the second week in a row, the SWAC Offensive Player of the Week is an athlete from Alcorn State. Senior running back, De’Lance Turner, won this week’s award after his historic performance against Southern University helped propel his team to victory.

Alcorn State began their season with a 29 point blowout win over Miles College. Turner rushed for a career-high 131 yards in that game, but would more than double his previous career-high against Southern.

For Alcorn State, Turner’s performance couldn’t have come at a better time. The Braves had taken a slight step back after losing two closely contested games in non-conference play.  This season, the  Braves have high hopes of winning the SWAC Championship and returning to the Celebration Bowl. Saturday’s game versus Southern was their first SWAC game of the season and a crucial first step in their championship quest.

De’Lance Turner did not disappoint the home crowd. He rushed for 272 yards; the second most in school history.  Most impressively, Turner  gained 272 yards on only 21 carries. That’s an average of 13.0 yards per rush. Turner would finish the game with three touchdowns.

On the strength of his performance, Alcorn State defeated Southern 48-31. The Braves next game is September 29th on the road against Texas Southern.
