Don’t sleep on the Hampton Lady Pirates. They are quietly becoming one of the best mid-major programs in all of women’s basketball. Yesterday, Coach David Six lead the Lady Pirates to their first ever win over UNC. This win marked Coach Six’s 11th victory over a “Power 5 Conference” opponent while at Hampton.

The Lady Pirates got off to a hot start, shooting 54.8 percent from the field. Hampton led by as many as 10 points during the first half, and had a 39-34 lead at halftime.

UNC responded well in the second half. The Tar Heels battled back to take a 59-52 lead with 6:30 left in the fourth quarter. This was the Tar Heels largest lead in the game.

The Lady Pirates suddenly found themselves down seven on the road to UNC, but did not panic. Within the next 72 seconds, the Lady Pirates responded with a 9-0 run to take a 61-59 lead over UNC.

The UNC Tar Heels would not go away and regained a 65-63 lead late in the fourth quarter. This would be the past Tar Heel lead. The Lady Pirates showed great poise down the stretch and finished the game on a 7-1 run to secure a 70-66 victory over UNC.
