WILBERFORCE, Ohio – The Central State Marauders beat Tuskegee, 56-48, on Tuesday afternoon.
CSU improved to 6-11 overall with a 5-6 mark in SIAC play. The Golden Tigers fall to 2-13 overall and 1-7 in the conference.
Neither team gained separation from the other in the earlu stages of the game. TU guard Travis Flagg knocked down a three-pointer to make the score 16-15 in favor of CSU at the 8:54 mark. CSU manufactured a 7-0 run to go up 22-14. Chris Scoot scored seven minutes in the final seven minutes of the half to help CSU take a 32-25 lead at intermission.
TU quickly cut the deficit down to 1 by scoring the first six points of the second half. TU took a 37-36 lead on a Flagg jumper with 12:48 remaining. The teams traded baskets over the span of the next four minutes resulting in a 44-44 tie with 8:29 to play.
Davone Daniels broke the tie with a three-pointer on CSU’s next possession to spark a 12-0 Marauder run. Frank Barber II capped off the run with a basket to put CSU up 56-44 with 2:30 to play. TU was never able to rebound as CSU went on to the eight point victory.
The CSU defense posted a season-best 48 points allowed. The Marauders held TU shooters o 32% from the field while forcing 14 turnovers.
Scott led CSU with 14 points and 2 blocked shots. Barber III finished with 13 points. Jeremy Brown led CSU with 11 rebounds to go along with 5 points, 4 steals and 2 assists.
TU was led by Daniel Roach’s 13 points and 8 rebounds.
The Marauders will renew a historic HBCU rivalry when they make the short trip across the street to play Wilberforce University on Thursday at 8 pm.
Holding TU to 48 points on Tuesday marked the lowest point total given up by a CSU team in 10 seasons.
CSU is in a tie for first in SIAC West Division with rival Kentucky State.
Prior to Tuesday’s game, Chris Scott was named the SIAC Newcomer of the Week.
CSU’s game against Tuskegee was rescheduled to be played on Tuesday afternoon due to inclement weather on Monday.
