Delmar Fieldhouse-  The 2018 SWAC Women’s Basketball Championship game featured a matchup between the Grambling State Lady Tigers and the Southern University Lady Jaguars.

Southern’s squad was anchored by SWAC Defensive Player of the Year, Brianna Green. Green, a 5’11 forward from Fort Lauderdale, Florida played a key role in Southern’s “40 Minutes of Mayhem” style of defensive. Green’s contributions were not solely limited to the defense. During the regular season, Green led the Lady Jaguars in points, rebounds, assists, and steals per game (16.9 PPG, 7.0 RPG, 2.9 APG, and 2.4 SPG).

Grambling State was lead by superstar guard Shakyla Hill. Earlier this seasons, Hill made national headlines when she became only the fourth woman in the history of NCAA women’s basketball to post a QUADRUPLE DOUBLE. Despite her historic season, Hill was not named the 2018 SWAC Women’s Player of the Year. Hill wasn’t shy when asked if she was snubbed for Player of the Year honors:

Hill wasn’t lying when she said “Everybody gotta feel me!” Shakyla nearly posted another quadruple double on Texas Southern in the SWAC quarterfinals with 15 points, 14 rebounds, 9 assists, and 8 steals.

Hill continued her strong play in the SWAC title game. The Tigers stumbled out the gate and had problems adjusting to the Lady Jaguar defense early.  Hill’s play helped steady the Tigers and they were able to put together a 9-0 run in the second quarter.  A half-court buzzer beater by Southern’s Samantha Duncan gave the Lady Jaguars a 39-37 lead at halftime.

Hill took over in second half, finishing the game with 27 points, 10 rebounds, 5 assists, and 3 steals in route to the Lady Tigers 72-68 win over Southern. Hill had plenty of help from her teammates Jazmin Boyd and Monisha Neal who both chipped in 11 points apiece.  After the game, Hill’s teammates lifted her on their shoulders and carried her off the court.

With the victory,  the Grambling State Lady Tigers earn their first trip to the NCAA tournament since 1999.  The Lady Tiger’s will find out what seed they earned and their opponent in the NCAA Tournament tomorrow, March 12th, on Selection Monday.
