The year of the upset continues…
The 2019-2020 college basketball season has seen an unprecedented level of parity. There have been five different teams ranked number one through the first 9 weeks of the season. In that span, three teams pulled off upset wins after being at least 25 point underdog. FAMU would become the fourth.
How It Happened
The Iowa State Cyclones started the game strong and looked like they would coast to an easy victory at home. The Cyclones went on a 19-2 run during the first half and held FAMU to just 24 points.
FAMU responded with their most complete performance of the season in the second half. During the half, FAMU outscored Iowa State 46-35. The Rattlers also scored 18 points off Iowa State turnovers and got 30 points from their bench.
Rattler guard, Rod Melton scored 15 of his team high 20 points in the second half. Melton also received a big boost on the boards from teammate D.J. Jones who added 16 points and 7 rebounds.
The Rattlers were trailing 68-67 with 48 seconds left in the game. Rod Melton missed a jumper with 28 seconds remaining, but D.J. Jones was able to snag the offensive rebound. After the board, FAMU called a timeout. After the timeout, Melton would sink the game winning shot with 10 seconds left. The final score was FAMU 70, Iowa State 68.
The FAMU victory snapped a 106 game losing streak against major conference teams that dated back to 1985!
