Over 11 thousand fans tuned in to watch Shaqir O’Neal announce where he’d be playing basketball this fall.
Shaqir partnered with high school hoops platform, Overtime, to showcase his formal decision.
Afterwards, Shaqir sat down for a interview and provided more insight into his decision.
Why Texas Southern?
Shaqir is the youngest son of NBA Hall of Famer, Shaquille O’Neal. Before becoming a NBA legend, his father Shaq starred for the LSU Tigers. Ironically Johnny Jones, Texas Southern’s current Head Coach, was Shaq’s assistant coach during his time at LSU.
Family connections aside, Texas Southern is one of the top HBCU basketball programs in the entire nation. Last season, Texas Southern won the SWAC championship and defeated Mount St. Mary’s 60-52 in the First Four of the NCAA tournament.
What Type of Player is Shaqir?
Unlike his father, Shaqir is both a guard and a three point shooter. Standing at 6’7, Shaqir helped lead Atlanta’s Creekside Christian Academy to a 24-7 record during his senior year.
